Writing from a Picture - abstract art - Day 4, Post Book Exercises

This time with a pretty abstract, surreal piece by Francis Mark. This one will give you a lot of room for interpretation to get your senses going. No guide for rhymes or syllables or anything, just try to keep it to “lines” that you could see getting into a song. Good luck!

Clouds dot and dash the sky
Ominous code against the dripping gold of dawn
The city sighs a snowflake cold
And gulps up souls in bottle
Capped and sealed like lost notes
Floating in a monochrome sea
Bound for Atlantis by way of Dunwich
Carried on the web-like breeze
In broken screams

Can you feel the dactyled wind?
Can you see the city watching?
Memories of a once green tree
Exploding from the apartments
The devil scrambles for a place to hide
But the chapel offers no sanctuary
From time

The city skyline filled with rage
Fumes pour into the burning sky
Poets trapped in an urban cage
Leaves cover a church that is shy
Walk slow and steady, follow the signs
Watched over by piercing eyes
Clouds form a dotted veneer
Bottles filled with cocktails of fear

These abstract pieces are a lot of fun - as there really are infinite interpretations!

All of these sentences make me see new things in the painting - I really enjoyed this more abstract exercise! I think you’ve done a better job than me with your verbs, and little details and metaphors - I love the bottles capping and sealing the souls, and particularly how you have interpreted the fact the church!

I agree, the abstract ones give you a lot of room to roam. I think you did really well. I especially like the ending couplet! It evokes some real interesting images!
